UK 'is facing a lost decade' in construction of homes
03 January 2012
CIS card holders may wish to add their voices to a debate about the future of UK housebuilding after comments made by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).
The organisation said far too few properties are being built to satisfy demand, claiming that there will be a shortfall of 750,000 houses by 2025 and that 250,000 are needed every year to prevent this.
It also warned too many developers are trying to make money from increased land values instead of building new homes and businesses.
IPPR director Nick Pearce insisted not enough demands are being placed on housebuilders by the government and suggested that developers with the right to build on public land should have time limits imposed for when the project will be completed.
"The government must demand more bang for the taxpayer's buck - if it doesn't, the result will be subsidised stagnation and another lost decade of housebuilding," he added.
Last month, the Markit/CIPS purchasing managers' index showed a reading of 52.3 for November 2011, where 50 is the marker for growth.
