Tradespeople may be replacing older vans

03 January 2012

Tradespeople including CIS card holders in the south of England may be looking into replacing their work vehicles after new rules aimed at cutting pollution came into effect in London.

From today (January 3rd 2011), large vans and minibuses that are more than ten years old or emit more than a certain level of emissions will have to pay £100 a day to enter Greater London.

This is known as the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) and will also involve charging lorries, buses and coaches that fall short on European Union emissions targets £200 a day.

Natalie Chapman, head of policy for London at the Freight Transport Association, said the consequences could seriously affect tradespeople.

"[It] will almost certainly bring serious consideration to renewing old vehicles for operators keen to avoid a heavy fine," she added.

The Freight Transport Association has advised drivers of Y-reg and some 51 plate-vehicles to stay out of London to avoid the fines.
