CIS card holders expect cuts to cause slowdown
16 December 2011
A survey of construction workers including CIS card holders has found that almost nine out of ten expect government spending cuts to have an effect on their business.
The poll, carried out by the CBI and Speedy Services, showed that 40 per cent of companies have seen a deterioration of the availability of finance over the past year, while two-thirds think the UK's planning system is now an obstacle.
Small businesses have been particularly badly affected by a lack of funding, with almost half saying they are finding it difficult to attain.
Perhaps as a result of these conditions, 24 per cent of those questioned said they expect business to decline.
However, most respondents spoke in favour of the measures mentioned in the recent Autumn Statement.
CBI deputy director-general Dr Neil Bentley said: "Construction firms are facing tough operating conditions and they are clear about what can be done to give the sector a boost."
Last month, construction industry supplier Glenigan found that construction project starts increased in October when compared with last year.
